Dan Gillmor

Dan Gillmor has broad experience in media. His first book, We the Media: Grassroots Journalism by the People, for the People, is internationally recognized as a catalyst for citizen media. It has been translated into many languages, most recently Korean and Arabic.

His latest book, Mediactive, is designed to turn passive media consumers into active users. Although both books were published in traditional forms, Dan also has made them available free online for noncommercial purposes.

Dan is director of the Knight Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. He is a contributor to Salon.com and the Mediactive blog, and an investor, board member or advisor to media companies and organizations around the world.

He is a former columnist for the San Jose Mercury News. His weblog for SiliconValley.com is believed to have been the first by a journalist for a traditional media company. Previously, he was a reporter for the Detroit Free Press and the Kansas City Times.

Dan lives in San Francisco and travels extensively.
