Haney Hong, Director

Haney Hong is Managing Partner at HDH & Associates, LLC, a management consultancy focused on responsible strategic planning and change management.  Additionally, he is a Navy Reserve Lieutenant Commander in command of one hundred fifty women and men who provide ordnance logistics support to the Fleet.  Haney is focused on robust citizenship engagement with democratic processes, and he firmly believes that journalists are the first line of defense against internal and external threats to a healthy democratic society.

Prior to his work with HDH & Associates, LLC, Haney served on active duty in the United States Navy for approximately seven years.  He served aboard USS Topeka (SSN 754), and deployed to the Western Pacific.  Ashore, he was the Flag Lieutenant and Executive Assistant to the Commander, Navy Recruiting Command, from 2007-2008 before serving for two years in the Office of the Secretary of the Navy at the Pentagon, where his portfolio spanned a range of policy, strategy, and budgetary issues for the Department of the Navy.

Haney is a deeply committed volunteer to institutions that promote public service.  He is the Founder and President of the Stanford Military Service Network and the Chief Executive Officer of the Harvard Kennedy School Community of San Diego.  He serves on the Advisory Council of AshokaU, an enterprise within Ashoka: Innovators for the Public.  He also serves as Chair of the Advisory Council for the University of San Diego Changemaker Challenge, and he is Secretary of the Navy Reserve Forces Policy Board.

Haney graduated from Stanford University in 2003 and Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government in 2012.  He was a Consulting Associate Professor for Stanford University’s Bing Stanford in Washington program from 2008-2010.  Additionally, he was an International and Global Affairs Fellow at Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Studies and a Dukakis Fellow in the Office of the Governor of New York.  He is a recipient of the Stanford Associates Award of Merit, and he was selected as part of the Top 40 Under 40 Military Class of 2011.  He was the Navy’s recipient in 2010 for the Federal Asian Pacific American Council Military Meritorious Service Award.  He has received various other personal and unit decorations as a military officer.
