By Maria Jose Valero and Sahar Majid

Our 2016 Alfred Friendly Fellows and Daniel Pearl Fellow come from countries with varying degrees of media repression and dangers for journalists, from self-protective censorship, government censorship, misinformation campaigns, military red lines and social media restrictions to sanctions, threats and physical attacks.

Gokce Aytulu, Amal Khan, Olena Goncharova, Mercy Adhiambo, Mario Jose Penton, and Thobile Hans talked to a reporting class at the University of Missouri School of Journalism about the struggles they face while doing their job. It was eye opening for the students to hear these journalists around the world share their hardships.
