Jessica Farias joined Alfred Friendly Press Partners as an intern in June 2014. She will be overseeing social media for the organization, posting and updating Alfred Friendly Press Partners’ Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn pages, as well as Fellow blogs, news and alumni stories; updating the website; and interviewing 2014 Fellows.
Farias is originally from Fortaleza, a coastal city on the north of Brazil. She studies journalism there, at the university, Faculdade 7 de Setembro. Farias has been living in the U.S. for the last ten months as a non-degree journalism student at University of Missouri-Columbia. For a reporting, news editing and TV production class at KOMU TV 8, she and other students experiences a real-time working environment. She also worked with clients to develop custom marketing strategies to grow their business and their profits at Lift Division and with the Columbia Missourian, selling advertising spaces in both online and print versions.
She loves to travel and to learn about places and different cultures. She views living in Columbia and Washington, D.C. as an extremely valuable cultural, personal and professional experience. “This internship will help me to improve my journalistic skills by working professionally with social media, blogs and the website,” she said. “This is really important since web journalism is becoming more and more important these days.”
After this summer she is going back to Brazil to finish her undergraduate studies but she plans to study abroad again for her master’s degree.
