David Reed teaches Ukrainian journalists at an ImpactMedia program in October in Kyiv

Program Director

David Reed joined the Alfred Friendly Press Partners in October 2014. He is responsible for advancing the mission of the organization and overseeing its fellowship program and international journalism training opportunities.

David is an adjunct professor at The Missouri School of Journalism, former Associated Press correspondent and former senior editor at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

At the journalism school, where students staff the professional daily news outlets, David was an editor at Missouri Business Alert, an independent digital newsroom, and an on-air host of Global Journalist, a weekly multimedia show. He was an executive editor and a writing coach at Vox, a weekly news magazine, and a consulting editor for Newsy, an online video news site that monitors and analyzes global news coverage.

David devises and runs the five weeks of annual training at the Missouri School of Journalism for Fellows before placing them in some of the nation’s best newsrooms. He’s also organized and led training programs in Pakistan and other countries. In Ukraine, David was a foreign media coach at a four-week program sponsored by the Foundation for Effective Governance to provide international training in economics journalism. His role was to direct the 16 students as they pitched, reported and wrote news articles published in the Kyiv Post that demonstrated what they learned from top-notch journalists and experts.

At Radio Free Europe, David supervised the central news desk, a 24-hour operation that files breaking stories broadcast daily in 19 countries of Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Caucasus and the Middle East.

David is a judge for the annual City and Regional Magazine and for the Association of Area Business Publications Awards. He is married to Katherine Reed, a professor at the Missouri School of Journalism, and they have one son, Elliot.
