AFPP Presents: Challenges and Rewards of Starting An Online News Platform

December 02 2022 at 11am central time

Imagine your news organization is struggling financially and laying off reporters.

Or is shutting down. Or has been taken over by an entity with questionable ties.

Journalists around the world must now be entrepreneurs as well as reporters. Their survival kit must now include knowledge of accounting, funding, management and other business skills.

Our fellowship program has started providing this kind of training to help our graduates become more resilient.

Our Fellows have launched an array of small, independent digital news outlets that are finding large audiences amid the overall decline of traditional media outlets.

In Pakistan, Ahmad Noorani’s FactFocus news outlet has exposed the vast wealth accumulated by generals and sparked national debates about the military’s power.

In Ukraine, a digital outlet that Olena Goncharova and two other Alfred Friendly Fellows helped launch in January is now the country’s largest English language media outlet.

In Nepal, Deepak Adhikari has started Nepal Check that checks statements made by public officials and offers easy to understand stories on complex topics.

Join us on Friday, December 2 at 11 a.m. Central U.S. time for our online panel featuring Noorani, Goncharova and Adhikari and other Fellows involved in this entrepreneurial journalism movement.

Please register to attend; this event is by donation to help support future fellowship opportunities. We will email registered attendees with the Zoom webinar link the day before the event.
